ABOUT MOUNT ATHOS

Separated from the rest of Macedonia and from the world at large, the easternmost peninsula of Halkidiki is a natural and spiritual paradise of indescribable grandeur and beauty: MOUNT ATHOS, the AKTI of the ancient Greeks, the sacred ATHOS, the GARDEN OF THE VIRGIN MARY, as the monks call it. For centuries, they have lived in monastic seclusion in its twenty great monasteries, sketes, hermitages and retreats.

It is the monastic state of Mount Athos, with its historic monasteries, cells built into caves or perched on cliffs, towers, domes, bell towers and chanting — a mountain-temple beneath the vault of the sky, a thousand-year-old ark of Christian Orthodoxy.
